Cambodia Crawfish is a family farm operation located in Kamchay Mear, Prey Veng Province, Cambodia.

Our family consists of a Khmer mother, a Dutch father and three young sons. We left Phnom Penh and moved to our rice farm in Prey Veng in 2021 at the start of the Corona epidemy.

 

As rice farming is not a profitable business, an extensive Web research started to find more profitable alternatives.

 

Following a hunch that Crawfish farming might be a good idea, we stumbled on an article on Crawfish Farming by Desmond Chow, founder of Singapore Crawfish. During his time as lecturer, with his class of 200 students, they analyzed many businesses with plants, livestock and seafood. After 9 months of extensive research, the results pointed out that Crawfish is the most profitable livestock to rear and sell. This is because of 3 main factors: the high reproduction rates of crawfishes, their low mortality, and their growing high international demand. Desmond is now running a successful Crawfish business!

 

We furthermore learned from the research that when starting a farm, the highest chance for success is created by copying an existing successful business. Starting from scratch and learning from one’s own mistakes has a much lower chance for success.

Following our research, we asked for help and learned and copied from existing Khmer Crawfish farms and as well from Desmond’s Singapore operations. We built a 22.000 M2 aquaculture farm in the middle of the vast rice fields of Prey Veng and we erected a 1.800 M2 hatchery next to our house.

Early 2022 the first live Crawfishes were introduced in the farm and hatchery.
